Problem Solving VS Problem Shifting

You know what I hate as a business owner? Paying money to a service that makes me do all the work anyways.

My kung fu is websites and digital marketing. Accounting? Not so much. But since I enjoy not getting angry letters from the IRS, I have to periodically take time away from paid work to keep the books balanced. To help, I recently tried signing up for a popular accounting service (cough Quickbooks cough) to help me streamline my bookkeeping.

My very first day with it was a complete loss. Spent it all dealing with a software bug and having to try three different ways of reaching customer support. An overseas representative I could barely understand finally admitted it’s an issue they’ve been trying to fix for days, and hopefully maybe it’ll be resolved… sometime. And then he then tried to upsell me. Twice.

NOPE. Done. The whole selling points of their software were time savings and ease of use. Instead I have a whole slew of new problems I have to solve and nothing to show for it. And as soon as something goes wrong, your support is beyond useless.

You know what would be way better to do my accounting with? An accountant.

Professional accountants and bookkeepers know things about the subject I don’t even know I don’t know. They can do the job faster and better than I ever could no matter what app I use. And if I have a question I can just call them directly. The time I get back offsets the cost because I’m spending more of it doing what I do best helping my own clients.

In the same way, I would not expect an accountant to know about responsive UI or conversion funnels or asset optimization. You can give them a so-called easy-to-use website builder, but handing someone expensive wire strippers doesn’t make them an electrician. If you don’t know how or why to use a tool, you won’t even realize it when you’re screwing it up.

We could burn our hours trying to muddle our way through the other's job. But it's way more efficient to let each expert do the work they know best.

Looking back, my experience wasn’t a complete waste of time. It became a perfect example of the OPPOSITE of what I want my business to be. We’re here to actually solve problems and give businesses their time back, not provide the illusion of it. We don’t just create custom websites and hand them off, we are long term partners here to take on day to day updates and take steps to continually grow your web presence. And if you ever have questions, you call us. On the phone. Directly. Crazy, right?

If you’re looking for someone who knows how to put your business online the right way and be there when it matters, send us a message or give us a call. We’re here for you.
